An Area Court sitting in Jos, on Wednesday sentenced a 21-year-old trader, John Emmanuel to one month imprisonment for snatching a handbag from a lady.
A panel of two magistrates, Adam Sadiq and Hyacinth Dolnaan who sentenced Emmanuel, however, gave him the option of a fine of N20,000.
The convict was also ordered to pay compensation of N30,000 to the complainant.
The court said the judgment would serve as a deterrent to those who would want to indulge in such criminal acts.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Ibrahim Gokwat told the court that the case was reported on Oct. 12 at the Anglo-Jos Police station by Ms Precious John, the complainant.
The prosecutor said that the convict snatched John’s bag when she alighted from a taxi.
The handbag, he said, contained a cell phone and other valuables.
Gokwat said a good Samaritan caught the convict and returned the bag and its content to the complainant.
The prosecutor said the offence is punishable under sections 277 and 372 of the Plateau Penal Code Law.
