Georgia’s senatorial race between Republican Herschel Walker and Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock will head to a run-off in December.
Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has confirmed that there will be a run-off election.
The Senate race in Georgia is still close between Walker and Warnock – Walker has over 48% of the vote, while Warnock has 49%.
Neither of the two candidates have secured more than 50% of the vote, meaning another election has to be held per Georgia laws.
The run-off election will take place on 6 December, according to BBC.
A top Georgia election official told the CNN that there are less than 10,000 votes left to be counted in that state, which meant the tight Senate race would go to a December run-off.
Gabriel Sterling, the chief operating officer for Georgia’s Secretary of State Office, said there are simply not enough votes left that could put Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock above the threshold needed to avoid a runoff.
“By our internal estimates we have less than 10,000 votes to go into the election reporting for the final counts,” Sterling said Wednesday. “There’s just not enough numbers out there still to change the outcome of this race,” he said.
