Senegal thrash host Qatar 1-3 on Friday to brighten their chances of qualifying for the round of 16 at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

The African champions who lost their opening match 0-2 to the Netherlands, capitalised on a defensive mistake to open scoring.

A mistake from the defence gifted a chance to a lurking Boulaye Dia, who kept his cool and rolled the ball into the net from close range.

Famara Diedhiou, on 48th minute, jumped highest inside the box to meet a perfectly executed corner kick by Ismail Jakobs.

His header was precise and ended up inside the left post, leaving the goalkeeper flapping in the wind.

On 67th minute, the ball was crossed into the box and Ismaeel Mohammad reacted quickest to send a shot flying towards the left side of the goal, but Edouard Mendy got a glove on it to thwart him.

Qatar pulled one goal back on 78th minute. Mohammed Muntari jumped highest to connect with a perfect cross from Ismaeel Mohammad and planted his close-range header into the left side of the goal.

Senegal made it 1-3 six minutes later. A precise cut back on the goal line from Iliman Ndiaye found Bamba Dieng right in front of goal, and he easily buried the ball into the middle of the goal.
