Afroreggaeton: Kweme Pioneers New Genre in Nigerian Music Scene
By Toyin Adebayo
In the last few years, the Nigerian music industry has witnessed the entry of a huge number of a disparate range of genres, with singers experimenting and pushing the limits of sound and style constantly. Of these, Afroreggaeton has gained much attention, largely due to Kweme, whose real name is Anita Osikweme Osikhena. The singer, formerly known as Aniitablonde, has been credited as one of the pioneering singers in giving Afroreggaeton shape and mainstream life.
Kweme’s work on Afroreggaeton began around the early 2020s when she started experimenting with combining the rhythmic patterns and lyrical forms of reggaeton with the energetic, percussion-based aspects of African music. This fusion produced a distinctive sound which merges the intensely danceable character of reggaeton with the rich cultural textures of African musical arts. Her early works, like her EP titled Tis25, also reflect her commitment to the evolution of this new genre.
Kweme’s evolution of Afroreggaeton has received mixed critiques from the fraternity of music. While some critics consider it a forward-thinking cross-cultural exchange that broadens the scope of contemporary African music, others observe that it extends boundaries beyond the traditional genre outlook. Music producer and industry executive Chijioke Obi described her work as “a bold step toward creating a new sonic identity that unites continents,” and added, “Kweme’s ability to fuse these sounds in an organic way is what makes her a trailblazer.”
Nigerian music performers have also issued statements on the potential of the style. Singer and songwriter Temi Dollface stated, “Afroreggaeton is an exciting new direction.”. It mirrors the internationalization of music in the contemporary era—where boundaries are dissolving, and fresh sounds are unfolding due to the fusion of diverse cultures.” At the same time, DJ and music commentator Kojo Agyemang remarked, “Kweme’s incorporation of Afroreggaeton reflects how Nigerian musicians are more and more exploring global genres, ensuring that their music is not only locally applicable but also internationally viable.”
Kweme’s past shows a dedicated artist who is enthusiastic about cultural expression. Nigerian-born and raised, she has spent numerous years in the entertainment industry, achieving early success through acting and performing. Her appointment as a model host for the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) affirms her international exposure and versatility.
As Afroreggaeton expands to take a place in Nigeria’s vibrant musical life, Kweme’s position as pioneer is significant. Her fusion not just contributes to the evolution of the style but also reflects a general trend among African artists remaking global musical currents using native rhythms. Professionals in the industry track her efforts as a barometer for how it will serve as an influence on up-and-coming talent and shape the next iteration of African popular music.
