Lionel Messi scored a brilliant goal on Saturday in his 1000th game, as Argentina beat Australia 2-1 to reach the quarter-final of the World Cup in Qatar.
Messi opened scoring for Argentina on 35th minute. He was set free in the area by Nicolas Otamendi and he made no mistake with a lovely finish into the bottom left corner.
A huge mistake by Australia’s goalkeeper gifted Argentina the second goal on 57th minute.
Mathew Ryan made a huge mistake and Julian Alvarez had an easy task to put the ball into the back of the net.
Australia reduced the tally on 77th minute as Enzo Fernandez scored an unlucky own goal! He deflected a shot into his own net.
Four minutes later, Aziz Behich went on a weaving run through the defence and got within shooting range but his effort was blocked.
Four minutes into added time, Martinez received a precise pass in the box and took the shot early. The ball headed towards the bottom left corner, but Ryan showed off his skills and made a brilliant save to deny him.
Garang Kuol nearly equalised for Australia. He met a cross inside the penalty area and unloaded a good attempt towards the right side of the goal. Emiliano Martinez was prepared and denied him with a fantastic save.
