World Cup: Ferdinand defends Messi, says best performance

Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand has described Lionel Messi’s display in Argentina’s win over Australia on Saturday as the “best individual performance” at the 2022 World Cup.

He commended the Argentine player in an interview with the BBC shortly after he scored his 1,000th goal.

On Saturday, Messi helped his country win 2-1 and advance to the quarterfinals.

The 35-year-old also set up two big chances for Lautaro Martinez, but the substitute squandered them, as the South Americans clung on in the late stages.

Speaking with BBC, Ferdinand said, “Messi has put on the best individual performance we’ve seen at this World Cup so far, by a mile.”

“Showboating, laying shots on a plate for teammates and the audience—it was almost godlike, after everything he does”.
