Remigius Onyemesim, popularly known as DJ Remmy,  has proven himself in diverse fields of music. Through his different forms, there’s a core ability of music creation, which ties into his production. As he’s shown with masterful control, he’s first and foremost a soundtracker of pristine moments, a curator of emotions  intensely tied to a local experience.

This is immediately apparent on “G.O.D,”  a record from DJ Remmy which features Loudspeeka. A fine collaboration, the storytelling-laden song is set forth by the inspiring production from DJ Remmy. It’s grounded in Afro elements but ripples with a swoony synth, an electronic presence that charges the record from behind.

A defining quality of good producers is their quiet insistence on being heard, by way of a signature touch that’s only picked upon by careful ears. On “G.O.D,” the drums pick up the role of vehicle, transporting the listener into a soundscape that is intentionally appreciative, positive in tone and resonance. You appreciate the care of the choices, which Loudspeeka surely does with his crisp flow and insightful lyricism.

“If no be G.O.D, how e for be as the government dey whine us / palliative wey come, dem no send us,” he raps on the hook, which makes that overt reference to Nigerian happenings in the thick of the pandemic. Throughout the song, that energy is maintained, utilizing the everyday language of Pidgin English to get at the matter, to remove any fuss created by formalities.

In that way, the groove resides side by side with the message, which is even more impressive considering the rather religious framing the song takes after. For the orchestrator DJ Remmy, it reveals a good understanding of the personnel needed to execute a record, because both artist and producer are in audible sync throughout the duration of the song.

Over the years, DJ Remmy has played a significant role in the music circles of the UK where he’s based. Teaching enthusiasts how to produce and engineer records, he subtly brings that educator side to his own creative work, where he often works with underground acts.

“G.O.D” sits up there with some of the best records DJ Remmy has created so far. It was a timely song when it was released and even more important now, when we must learn to count our blessings amidst all the troubles of the world.
