Mother of two killed in London stampede at Asake's music concert is a Nigerian

Rebecca Ikumelo, 33, of Newham, who died after a stampede at the 02 Brixton Academy on Thursday, is a Nigerian and a single mother.

A stampede on Thursday night at the 02 Brixton Academy, London, where Nigerian singer Ahmed Ololade fondly called Asake was billed to perform, led to eight people injured with four cases critical.

The Metropolitan Police said they are still investigating the incident and announced that Ikumelo has been confirmed dead.

Two other women – aged 21 and 23 – remain in a critical condition.

But a statement from Rebecca’s family said: “Rebecca was a graduate of nursing. She was an adorable mother of two children who loved working with kids.

“She was well respected in the family for her care, kindness and love. Her parents call her Tosin (short for Oluwatosin) meaning ‘Lord is Worthy’.”

According to MyLondon, the Ikumelo died after sustaining critical injuries at the crowd crush at O2 Academy Brixton on Thursday, saying she was a single mum-of-two.

Rebecca tragically passed away this morning (Saturday December 17) following the incident on Thursday outside the venue as Nigerian Afrobeats singer and songwriter Asake was performing.

Toni Tone, in  a twitter post decried the death of Rebecca. She posted a beautiful photo of her and wrote: “This photo was taken the day I last saw Rebecca. She was a beautiful woman who radiated positive energy and was dedicated to being the best version of herself for her kids. She also did so much to raise awareness of autism spectrum disorder. My heart goes out to her family.”

Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove said: “From the outset, the police investigation into the incident at the Brixton Academy has been painstaking and forensic in its nature, and I can assure Rebecca’s family and friends that this work will continue for as long as necessary.

“We are determined, along with our partners, to do everything we can to establish exactly what happened on Thursday night. My thoughts and deepest sympathies remain with Rebecca’s family and all those affected.”
