The Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) has resumed train services on the Kaduna-Abuja route, four days after it was suspended.

The first train from Kaduna’s Rigasa train station to Abuja left at 7 a.m. on Tuesday.

Earlier on Friday, the NRC suspended operations on the Kaduna-Abuja route following the derailment of an Abuja-bound train at Kubwa in the nation’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on the same day.

Some passengers, who expressed relief at the resumption of train services, said the suspension disrupted their activities for the few days it lasted.

However, they appealed to NRC management to put all the necessary measures in place to forestall a future occurrence of a train derailment or any other security breach.

One passenger, Mahmood Bala, noted that the resumed services were commendable.

“It’s good, but the truth of the matter is that the government should be conscious of the security of not only the passengers but the security situation of the country.”

“The government should take enough measures to provide safety and security,” he said.

Another commuter, Ayuba Mohammed, bemoaned the negative impact of the train derailment, saying, “Definitely, it would have destabilised a lot of programmes or businesses for a lot of people.”

“One is happy that it has resumed, [but] the government should be conscious about [passengers’] safety and stop things like that from happening.”

“It disrupts a lot of things you would have planned because you are probably used to going by train,” he added.
