Nearly 7,000 confirmed dead in Turkey after quake

Nearly 7,000 people have been confirmed dead in Turkey following Monday’s earthquake, according to official figures.

According to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), approximately 6,957 people died and over 38,000 were injured.

The number of rescuers attempting to locate survivors and victims has surpassed 96,000, according to the authority, including international teams.

In addition to the deaths in Turkey, more than 2,000 people were killed in neighbouring Syria as a result of Monday’s devastating earthquake.

The president’s office has announced that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is scheduled to visit Kahramanmaras and Hatay. He will also go to Pazarcik, the epicentre of the quake.

He’s declared a three-month state of emergency in the 10 provinces worst affected.
