US makes important statement on Nigeria's presidential election

The United States on Wednesday said it is not supporting any presidential candidate to win this weekend Nigeria’s presidential election.

US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken; Samantha Power, USAID Administrator and Linda Thomas-Greenfield, US Ambassador to UN spoke in a video on the verified Twitter handle of Blinken on Wednesday.

According to Blinken, the United States stands with the Nigerian people as they prepared to make their voices heard by voting in general elections on February 25.

“We do not support any individual candidate for office, but we strongly support free, fair, and peaceful elections.

“Nigeria’s constitution like that of America’s begins with a simple and profound idea: ‘We the people’ and during this election, you the people of Nigeria have a chance to make your voice heard, to choose your future.

“The United States does not support any individual candidate office, but we strongly support a peaceful election that reflects the will of the people of Nigeria, because free and fair elections in Nigeria help create and freer and fairer world for everyone,” he said.

The US said the vote of the people mattered, saying “this election matters not only to Nigeria but the rest of the world. We’ve invested in your success, our shared democratic futures depend on it.

“Be prepared to vote because your voice matters. Nigerian people have a friend and partner in the United States of America,” Blinken said.
