Rivers: Elections to be repeated in 7 wards of Degema LG

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has said elections will be repeated in the Seven Wards of Degema local government area of Rivers State.

Elections were not conducted in some parts of the coastal local government area on Saturday due to logistics and other operational challenges.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, for Rivers State, Dr Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem, announced this to journalists on Sunday.
He also said that most of the results from the Saturday’s election are not yet ready yet for announcement.

The REC who was updating the media about the presidential and national assembly elections conducted yesterday also explained why it was difficult to upload results polling units into INEC iREV portal right from the polling units.

Alalibo Sinikiem explained that the inability to upload results straight from the polling Units at the end of voting was essentially due challenges with the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System, BIVAS.

He said presidential and national assembly elections were going on smoothly until the BIVAS started malfunctioning in some areas making it difficult to upload results into the INEC Server.

He, however, said it was later discovered that the problem was national one.

He assured that the state in touch with the national headquarters for directives.

While answering questions about what will happen in some areas where there were no elections, Sinikiem explained that such isolated cases will be examined to see if they can have substantial implications on the overall results.
