Death toll in Thursday’s fatal crash between a BRT and train in Ikeja area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria has reached six, with 79 people injured.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu visited victims of the accident at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja on Thursday afternoon to sympathise with them.
Two people died on the scene when the bus conveying Lagos State Government workers crashed with a train at PWD area of Ikeja, while four others died at LASUTH.
The Staff bus with Number 33 was carrying civil servants and their dependants from Isolo to Alausa when the accident occurred.
Speaking with newsmen at LASUTH, Sanwo-Olu hinted that 85 people were involved in the accident out of which 42 had moderate injuries, 29, serious injuries, eight with mild injuries, while six people had died so far.
Sanwo-Olu also declared that work stops at noon tomorrow for all civil servants in the state and directed that flags be raised at half mast, tomorrow, Friday, 10th March while all campaign activities have been suspended for the next three days.
The governor commended all responders, staff of LASUTH and LASUCOM, security agencies for their prompt response, as well as his two political opponents, Jide Adediran and Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour for also visiting the victims, noting that Lagos has the capacity to tackle emergency.
Sanwo-Olu, who said investigation was ongoing, appealed and encouraged public spirited Nigerians to come forward voluntarily and donate blood to re-stock the blood bank.
Meanwhile, the driver of the bus is currently in the custody of the Lagos State Police Command in Ikeja.
