Mbappe named captain of French national team

Kylian Mbappe, who plays forward for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has been selected to succeed Hugo Lloris as captain of France’s national team.

Mbappe accepted the captaincy after chatting with Didier Deschamps, according to the French sports newspaper L’Equipe.

The 24-year-old had been mentioned as a potential candidate for the position ever since Lloris, the goalie, announced his retirement from international competition in January.

This comes just weeks after leading France to their second consecutive World Cup final when they lost to Argentina.

Mbappe has been capped 66 times and was instrumental in France’s World Cup victory in 2018 as well as their runner-up finish in 2022.
