A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has granted N100 million bail to Chinyere Igwe,a federal lawmaker representing Port Harcourt constituency 2 of Rivers State at the House of Representatives who was arraigned on money laundering charges.

The Presiding Judge, Justice Stephen Daylop-Pam, also ordered Igwe to deposit his international passport with the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS.

The Judge also ordered that he should not travel outside the country throughout his trial period.

Justice Daylop-Pam thereafter adjourned his trial to till 4th of May, 2023.

Igwe , a chieftain of People Democratic Party, PDP, in Rivers and loyalists of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was was arrested on the 24th day of February, 2023, (the eve of the Presidential election), for being in possession of the sum of 498,000 USD without declaring the sum at the Central Bank of Nigeria under the money laundering Act.

He was also caught with a sheet of paper indicating how the money is to be shared to members of PDP across Rivers State.
He reportedly told investigators that the the dollars were election money given to him by the former Vice President.

The office of the Federal Attorney General of federation has handed over the lawmaker’s trial for money laundering Rivers State Attorney General.

This was revealed by a counsel in the Rivers State Attorney General’s office, Chidi Eke, at previous sitting of the Court.
