Rivers governor, Nyesom Wike, has said he will not run away from Nigeria at the end of his tenure on 29 May because of fear of arrest by anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Wike said this while answering questions during his appearance on Channels Television breakfast programme, SUNRISE on Monday.
He was reacting to recent revelations by the Chairman of EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa, that the anti-graft agency will embark on arrest of corrupt governors whose tenure will expire on May 29 immediately they leave office.
Nigerian governors cannot be arrested while in office because they enjoy immunity.
But Wike, who is suspected to be one of the governors under the radar of the EFCC, said he is not bothered by the threat of the anti-graft agency to arrest governors after their exit from office on 29 May.
He, however, vowed that he will not run away from Nigeria days before the inauguration of his successor as some ex-governors had done in the past. Wike said he will be part of the handover ceremony and will honour the invitation of EFCC if he is invited.
“I’m not going to run away because of EFCC. Why should they invite me? If they invite me, I will honour their invitation. I will not run away,” Wike said.
