The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), has warned the management of Lagos State University, LASU that it would be violating the law if its stopped the sale of other bread aside from the one produced by it in the institution’s campus.

Mr Babatunde Irukera, the Executive Vice Chairman of FCCPC gave the warning in his official Twitter handle @TundeIrukera while reacting to recent revelation by the management of LASU that it had started producing bread that will be sold on its campus.

LASU had on its official Twitter handle @LASUOfficial last week commended the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ibiyemi Bello, for setting up a new bakery on campus.

The Vice Chancellor said the bakery is part of her administration’s drive to increase Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

”The LASU bread will henceforth be the only bread on the university main campus,” she said.

But FCCPC frowned at the plan of LASU to sell only the bread, produced by the institution, on campus.

Irukera said that it is an offence under the FCCP Act to limit competition in that manner.

“I am afraid this presents a potential violation of competition law. LASU is not exempted because governments are also liable when they engage in commerce,” he said.
