Former Deputy Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Dr Nasiru Idris of the APC has been declared winner of the  Kebbi governorship election.

Idris, a unionist, educationist and currently the National President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) garnered a total of 409,225 votes to win the election.

His his closest opponent in the governorship contest, Aminu Bande of PDP scored 360,940 votes, according to results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

INEC had declared the March 18 governorship election in the state inconclusive and subsequently, rerun election was held on Saturday in 142 polling units across 20 of the 21 Local Government Areas of the state.

The final result was announced at INEC’s headquarters in Birnin Kebbi by the Returning Officer, Prof. Yusuf Sa’idu of Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto on Sunday.

He said the total votes cast stood at 800,560, out of which valid votes were 781,478, while 19,082 votes were rejected.

“I, Prof. Yusuf Sa’idu, the Returning Officer of the governorship election held on April 15, 2023, declare that Nasiru Idris of APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes, is hereby returned elected as Governor of Kebbi,” he added.
