Breaking: INEC declares PDP's Fintiri winner of Adamawa Governorship election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday declared PDP’s Ahmadu Fintiri winner of the governorship election in Adamawa State.

Announcing the results in Yola on Tuesday, INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof. Mohammed Mele declared Fintiri winner of the poll having satisfied the requirements of the law.

The Adamawa governor polled 430,861 votes to win his re-election by defeating Aishatu Dahiru, popularly known as Binani, who polled 398,788 votes.

The election which was first held on 18 March was declared inconclusive, with a new date fixed for 15 April.

The results of the supplementary election showed that Fintiri won with the total votes of 9,337 to defeat Binani, who came second in the poll with a total of 6,513 votes.

On Sunday, there was drama in Yola when the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Yunusa Hudu Ari, usurped the power of the returning officer by declaring  Binani the winner of the governorship poll, while the results of the supplementary election was yet to be fully collated.

INEC’s headquarters had to declare the announcement null and void and summoned the REC, who was later suspended and ordered to stay away from INEC’s office in Adamawa.

The commission had also on Tuesday said it would write to the Inspector General of Police to investigate the REC and prosecute him if need be.
