France has begun a “rapid evacuation operation” of citizens and diplomatic personnel from Sudan, according to its foreign ministry.
Citizens of “European and allied partner” countries would be included, according to the ministry.
It comes as US government personnel and Iraqi diplomats are evacuated from embassies in Khartoum, as well as Saudi officials’ first evacuations of civilians from Qatar, Egypt, Canada, India, Burkina Faso, and the United Arab Emirates.
Fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) resumed despite a 72-hour truce declared for the Muslim holiday of Eid.
Explosions and clashes were reported early Sunday morning in Khartoum, particularly near the military headquarters and presidential palace.
Eyewitnesses claim to have heard aerial attacks, heavy weapons, and rocket launchers in Khartoum.
A spokesperson for the Sudanese Armed Forces announced the release of inmates from two prisons: El Hoda in northwest Omdurman and Soba on Saturday night.
El Hoda’s inmates include members of the security services, some of whom have received death sentences. The RSF has members in both prisons.
But, the RSF denied that any prisoners had been released.
