Austrian government officials and federal legislators will delete the video-sharing app TikTok from government-issued phones in order to prevent the Chinese running corporation from accessing critical data.

Gerhard Karner, Austria’s Interior Minister, stated on Wednesday that officials and lawmakers at the state and municipal levels had been advised to stop using the app for official purposes.

He stated that politicians and officials were able to use the app privately.

Austria now joins Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the European Commission in enacting similar laws for the public sector.

TikTok is run by the Chinese tech firm Bytedance, which is not owned by the government.

Critics, however, point out that the Communist Party and Chinese authorities were theoretically able to exercise influence and acquire data from internet businesses.
