Patients groan as doctors join strike in Edo

Resident doctors in government hospitals in Edo state on Wednesday joined their counterparts across the country for the commencement of he five days warning strike declared by the national leadership of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD).

President ARD, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) chapter, Dr David Orhewere, disclosed this in an interview with journalists in Benin, the state capital.

Orhewere stated that his members were on ground at the hospital to ensure total compliance by his members.

He disclosed that the government had been given 14 days to do the needful, but unfortunately, no action was taken hence, the warning strike that will end on Monday.

“At UBTH, our members had recommended on Sunday that the non-critical patients be discharged and that is the duty of the consultants to do because the patients are theirs in the first place.

“None of our members are working and the consultants will see patients during the strike. I can say if more patients have discharged on Monday. It may not be an ideal situation but that the situation right now.

“It is sad that strike have become the only language the government understands. We are hoping that it will be effective. Our members are in good spirit and committed to the cause,” he said.
