OAU former VC, Prof Cyril Onwumechili, dies at 91

The administration of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have announced the death of Prof. Cyril Onwumechili, the institution’s fourth substantive vice chancellor, at the age of 91.

This is contained in a statement issued by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, on Friday in Ile-Ife.

Olarenwaju described the acclaimed former Vice Chancellor as a visionary leader, an accomplished academic, and a compassionate individual who made vital contributions to the institution’s growth and prosperity.

From 1979 until 1982, Onwumechili was the university’s vice chancellor.

According to the PRO, renowned physicist Prof. Onwumechili was instrumental in setting the university’s destiny, directing it towards excellence and sustaining its dedication to academic rigour, innovation, and societal impact.
