The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has revealed that about 8.4 million people have fully received Covid-19 vaccination in Kano, while three million people are partially vaccinated in the state.

NLC said the encouraging response followed a sensitization campaign launched by its leadership, in partnership with the National Agency for the Control of Aids (NACA).

The Kano state Coordinator of the COVID-19 Testing and Vaccination Sensitization Campaign, Comrade Husaini Budah who doubles as the state Secretary of NLC, disclosed this on Wednesday during a press conference at the state NLC secretariat.

According to him, the three-day campaign which will be rounded off on May 26 will be taken to workers’ offices at Audu Bako Secretariat, Sabon Gari axis of the state, motor parks, markets and other public places.

He stated that: “With the disruptions caused by the pandemic in places of work and in society, it became very necessary for the working people in Nigeria to be mobilized for testing and vaccination against the disease so that the workplace will be free of COVID-19, for optimal productivity to be attained.”

Comrade Budah further stated that “it was in light of this development that the NLC sought the support of the Global Fund to undertake the project tagged: ‘Social Mobilization for COVID-19 Testing and Vaccination in the Workplace,’ to complement the efforts of the government on public health management in Nigeria.

“The focus of the project is for NLC to engage in massive mobilization and sensitization of the workers and their employers to embrace testing for and vaccination against COVID-19.

“This is because the workplace provides access to workers in their large numbers and can be used to provide them with information on the pandemic.”

He listed the activities carried out so far in the project including review and validation of the workplace guidelines on COVID-19, the C19 RM Grant Start-up Orientation Workshop, among others.

He, however, called on workers and employers of labour to take measures to minimize the risk of transmission of COVID-19 among workers, pointing out that even though the pandemic has been neutralized, there is a need for continuous precautions as it has come to live with us like other diseases such as malaria.
