Panic as plane skids off runway at Lagos Airport

A plane belonging to the United Nigeria Airlines skidded off the runway on Wednesday at the local wing of the Murtala Muhammed International airport, Lagos.

There was panic among the 50 passengers that boarded the plane which arrived from Ebonyi.

Achilleus-Chud Uchegbu, The Head, Corporate Communications of the airline, said the aircraft landed safely but was forced to terminate its movement to the apron off the runway.

According to him, all passengers disembarked safely and were transported to the arrival hall alongside their luggage.

He said officials of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) were at the scene of the incident.

He said FAAN, alongside UNA engineers were working to move the aircraft to the hangar.

Uchegbu added that the Nigeria Civil Aviation Agency (NCAA) and the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) had been duly notified and were on the scene.

He said the United Nigeria Airlines was collaborating fully with the authorities.

Uchegbu said the airline usually maintained the strictest safety standards in its operations and would continue to prioritise the safety of passengers at all times.

On 7 May, 2023, a Max Air flight crash-landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport with 143 passengers and a baby escaping death by the whiskers.

The two tyres of the aircraft burst into flames after it crash-landed with emergency bodies putting out the fire.
