A 5.0-magnitude earthquake in Johannesburg on Sunday, shaking buildings across South Africa’s most populous province, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The tremor occurred around 2:38 a.m. (0038 GMT), approximately 10 kilometres (six miles) below the surface, according to the USGS.

Buildings trembled across the Gauteng province, which includes Johannesburg, the country’s main city and commercial centre.

Residents across the province felt the tremor, and several shared photos of minor structural damage to walls on social media.

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck a gold mining community near Johannesburg in August 2014.

The most recent big earthquake to strike South Africa was a 6.3-magnitude tremor in the Western Cape province in 1969.
