President Bola Ahmed Tinubu inspected Guard of Honour to mark the June 12, 2023 Democracy Day at the Aso Rock presidential villa on Monday.

The President inspected the Guard of Honour soon after he delivered a speech which was aired nationwide to mark his first celebration of Democracy Day as Nigeria’s President.

Tinubu had on his Facebook page said, “It was an honour to inspect the immaculate Presidential Guard of Honour mounted by brave men and women of our Armed Forces on this special day.

“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us remember and honour all the heroes who championed our country’s freedom from tyranny and renew our collective commitment to keep the light of liberty burning in our land.

President Muhammadu Buhari on June 6, 2018, declared June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day instead of May 29 in honour of late Chief M.K.O Abiola.

Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election died in detention for an alleged treason.

The declaration followed many years of agitations by civil society groups that Abiola must be immortalised.
