Police are on a manhunt for gunmen suspected to be cultists who shot two persons dead on Saturday night along Ubeta Owube Road in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State.

It was learnt that the driver of a vehicle carrying building materials and the owner were on their way to Owube community in the LGA when the gunmen ambushed and shot them dead.

In a telephone interview with our reporter, Major Elleh, a native of Ubarama community in Ahoada West, who is also a former Community Development Committee (CDC) Chairman confirmed the attack.

He said he got reliable information on Saturday that two guys were shot dead in Owube, a neighbouring community to his.

Mr Elleh said one of the persons shot dead was identified as Confidence Chalikobi who was living in Port Harcourt.

“His father’s house was destroyed during the flood. He bought some building materials to rebuild the house before running into an ambush by hoodlums who shot him dead.

“The slain Driver of the vehicle is from Elemechi Ogbogu of Owube community.

“I call on stakeholders and the Local Government Area, the Chairman to give necessary support to the new Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and other security agencies in the area to clamp down on criminal elements, ” Mr Elleh said.

CP Nwonyi Polycarp Emeka had, a few days after the assumption of office, redeployed Divisional Police Officers of Akinima Police Division and Ahoada Police Division in Ahoada West and East Local Government Area.

The redeployment of Divisional Police Officers drastically reduced the activities of cultists and other criminal elements in the area.

The Spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko was yet to respond to text messages sent to her mobile phone by our reporter as of the time of filing this report.
