The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Kano, Prof. Abdurrahman Abba Sheshe, on Saturday officially received additional postnatal ward built and donated to the hospital by Zhahir Foundation.

Speaking, during the official commissioning and handing over of the ward, Prof. Abdurrahman said that, “the new Postnatal ward will compliment the old one as well as allow the hospital to match with international standard before discharging women who gave birth.”

According to him, “the ideal thing is that when a woman gave birth in a hospital, she is supposed to stay in the hospital and rest for at least 24 hours before she is discharged home.

“This is to enable the clinicians/ doctors rule out the unforseen problems that may occur after the delivery.”

Prof. Abdurrahman further explained that, “but due to lack of enough accommodation/ bed space in the hospital, some women were even discharged right from labor ward in order to accommodate other patients.”

He also commented on the procedure of admission into every ward in the hospital as in line with standard practice of government and Teaching Hospitals in Nigeria and abroad.

Commissioning and Presenting the ward to the management of AKRH, Alhaji Yusuf Dayyabu (Zanna Uban Doma Damaturu), said the new ward popularly known as Tsohon Gabas New Postnatal Ward was named after their late father who spent most of his life in the eastern part of Nigeria.

He called on all the patients that will be admitted in the ward and those present at the commissioning exercise to pray for the repose of the soul the man.

In his remarks, the Chairman Local Organizing Committee and Chairman Medical Advisory Committee in AKTH, Prof. Auwalu Umar Gajida, described the ward, “as a very mighty one. I pray to Almighty God to reward the Donor with Jannatul Firdausi.”

He added that the new 30-bedded ward, also comprised of six Consultant Rooms, one pantry, one Nurses Common Room, six Amenity Rooms, six Open Wards with six cubicles and four bed in each.
