Non-governmental groups under the aegis of ATM Networks working with the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has decries high cost of treatments for HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis at Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the country.

Speaking at a news conference in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the Programme Officer, ATM Network, Tayo Akinpelu said that the high cost was as a result of hidden charges and inadequate staff discipline which had posed a significant barrier to access and adherence, particularly for vulnerable populations.

Akinpelu lamented that many individuals affected by these diseases were unable to afford the necessary medications, diagnostics test and supportive care and might forgo treatment, leading to worsening health conditions, increase disease transmission and prolonged epidemics.

He, however, called for urgent attentions and determined efforts from relevant stakeholders, including the government, private organisations and local communities.

According to him, urgent attentions given to this issue would greatly improve the management of HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and Tuberculosis and ultimately contribute to reducing the burden of these diseases on the population.

He advised government officials and policymakers to prioritise and increase funding for primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs).

Akinpelu added that adequate financial support and improved coordination were crucial for the centres to deliver quality healthcare services, including malaria prevention and treatment to the community.

The group, however, demand allocation of more resources to PHCs, saying that governments could strengthen primary health care infrastructure, enhance healthcare workforce capacity and ensure that essential services were accessible to all.
