Nigeria’s transactions advisory industry continues to dominate as one of the country’s top-paying sectors, with new data confirming that top performers earn more than 50 percent above median salaries. A 2023 survey covering 2,900 transactions advisory professionals has revealed detailed compensation data across corporate finance, project finance, advisory, and specialized roles, underscoring how experience, deal complexity, and leadership responsibility shape earnings.

Survey Methodology

The report is based on HR-verified payroll submissions and confidential professional data from IOCs, indigenous producers, Big Four accounting firms, advisory firms, development finance institutions, and renewable energy developers. Roles were grouped into 12 job fields, with five or more titles in each field to capture Senior, Lead, Manager, and specialist levels.

Salaries were segmented by Lagos headquarters, Port Harcourt/Warri operations, and international/regional assignments, applying a 15–25 percent premium for roles with significant international exposure. Medians and 90th percentiles were calculated, outliers removed, and all findings validated against PayScale, Glassdoor, Robert Walters Africa, Michael Page, and industry compensation benchmarks.

Analysis of Salary Spread

The widest gap appears between Junior Analysts (₦4M median) and CFOs at mid-sized energy companies (₦10M at the 90th percentile), a ratio exceeding 12:1. Investment banking and private equity roles, now tracked for the first time, show exceptional packages as firms compete for talent capable of executing complex energy transactions and infrastructure financings.

Industry observers say these findings align with global trends where climate finance, ESG integration, and energy transition expertise are no longer niche skills but strategic imperatives for capital allocation, investor confidence, and regulatory compliance.

Expert Viewpoint

“Top-quartile earners are often those who not only manage financial operations but deliver measurable outcomes,” one HR consultant said. “Closing billion-naira financings, structuring bankable PPPs, achieving cost of capital reductions, and ESG reporting that meets IFC standards all drive higher compensation packages.”

Key Takeaway

Nigeria’s energy transactions advisory industry rewards high-impact transaction execution and leadership roles with significant pay premiums. The data suggests that professionals who document deal closures, capital efficiency gains, ESG compliance milestones, and innovative financing structures are well-positioned to negotiate packages near the 90th percentile.

Industry Outlook

Climate finance, ESG integration, and energy transition mandates are expected to keep upward pressure on salaries into 2024. Gas expansion projects, renewable energy financings, and refinery upgrade transactions will require senior project finance managers, climate finance specialists, and financial modelling leads to structure bankable deals — and employers are already aligning pay scales to secure scarce talent.
