Heat and Control: Kayoden Deepens His Electronic Dance Identity on “Mombasa Nights”

“Mombasa Nights” is a song by Kayode Charles Olonijaye, well known as Kayoden. The song can be found on a variety of digital music streaming services and was released on July 26,  2023. It is pleasing to the ears of listeners because of its calm beginning, and with the style used. This song clearly demonstrates his development as an African electronic music artist and afro-fusion musician. This song demonstrates that he is a part of the shift as more Nigerian musicians experiment with electronic music. 

Afro-fusion  has been the interest of Nigerian producer and composer, Kayoden. When he first started as a disc jockey, he noticed how the people always react when this style comes up. “Mombasa Nights” continues in that direction, but with a more focused and controlled mood. He is not trying to be loud. He is choosing control.

The song stays in a steady late-night atmosphere from beginning to end. The message passed by the singer is clearer with the beat. The beat also makes the mood calm, however, not so calm at some points. This shows human confidence in his sound.

Towards the end, the word, (Heat) is repeated many times. In this case, “heat” refers to a strong physical and emotional connection. The music remains calm, so the repeated word stands out more. The intensity increases without changing the instruments. This shows Kayoden’s ability to use a few words to create strong feelings. He increases emotion without changing the beat. That shows control.

The vocal that is sampled is gentle, and it is used to create a sensual effect. His voice syncs with the electronic production. Even though the lyrics are repeated, Kayoden makes little changes in the tone to keep the song engaging. His performance exposes his creativity and depth.. That makes the song too real.
