Nigeria defeated arch-rivals Senegal 84-74 points in Kigali, Rwanda to win a fourth FIBA Women’s Afrobasket title on the bounce.
The match which was a remake of the 2019 final at the Dakar Arena saw D’Tigress asserted themselves as the best in Africa.
Murjanatu Musa registered 12 rebounds and 2 steals while Ifunaya Okoro scored 16 points and provided two assists to power Nigeria to a 6th title on the Continent while record champions Senegal’s wait for a 12th title continues.
Rena Wakama went into the 2023 Afrobasket Women tournament as the only female head coach.
Following the victorious outing of  D’Tigress, CoachRena takes her place in history as the first female coach to have accomplished this feat in the history of the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.
Amy Okonkwo was declared the Most Valuable Player (MVP)  of the tournament.
The last time Nigeria lost a game in the Women’s Afrobasket was 2015 against Cameroon in the semi-finals.
Wakama”s D’tigress records in the competition are, 69-35 against Congo, 83-65 against Egypt, 59-52 against Mozambique and now 79-48 against Rwanda
