Burna Boy: King of Afrobeats?

In the dynamic world of music, few artistes have managed to carve a niche as distinctive and influential as Burna Boy particularly in Afrobeats.

His unique sound, passionate performances, meaningful lyrics, and social activism have undoubtedly contributed to his stature. As Afrobeats continues to captivate global audiences, Burna Boy’s impact on the genre is undeniable. His fusion of Afrobeats, reggae, dancehall, and hip-hop elements creates a unique sensual appeal that resonates with fans all over the world.

From his early beginnings to his recent album release, Burna Boy’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. The question that now lingers is whether Burna Boy deserves the title of the “King of Afrobeats”.

Born on July 2, 1991, Burna Boy‘s musical journey ignited with the release of “Like to Party” in 2012, the lead single from his debut studio album “L.I.F.E” in 2013. This marked the inception of a career that soon propel him to international stardom.

In the subsequent years, Burna Boy’s recognition was marked by a series of accomplishments that solidified his position as a musical force. His signing with Bad Habit/Atlantic Records in the US and Warner Music Group on the global stage further elevated his profile. The release of albums like “Outside” in 2018 and “African Giant” in 2019 garnered critical acclaim, with the latter earning him a Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album.

Burna Boy’s artistry and impact have not gone unnoticed. The BET Awards recognized him as the Best International Act multiple times, and his accolades include MTV Europe Music Awards, Headies Awards, and more. His fifth studio album, “Twice as Tall,” clinched the Grammy Award for Best World Music Album, cementing his global influence.

“I Told Them”  which is his seventh album attempts to traverse multiple musical realms, combining Afrobeats and Hip Hop elements. Interestingly, Burna Boy had previously criticized certain aspects of both genres, raising eyebrows when he claimed Afrobeats lacked substance. ‘I Told Them’ album serves as a declaration to those who doubted his potential. The central theme of self-confidence is dominant in the album and it evidently replies his critics. In an interview with Apple Music, Burna Boy said 90 per cent of Afrobeats songs are devoid of real-life experiences and only portray an amazing time that life isn’t all about.

Whether Burna Boy is definitively the king or a vital star within the genre of Afrobeats, one thing is certain: Burna Boy’s impact transcends borders, and his influence will continue to resonate for generations to come.
