Police operatives in Ogun early Friday morning smashed a notorious gang of transformer vandals operating in the Owode Egba axis of Obafemi Owode Local government area of the state.

A member of the gang, identified as Adewole Adekunle, was arrested while others escaped, leaving behind the tools they used for their criminal activities and a bus.

The arrest of the suspect and smashing of the gang followed alarm to the police by residents of Showo community along Kobape Sagamu-Abeokuta Express to operatves at Owode Egba Police Division Command of ongoing suspicious activities in their area at about 4:30 hours of on Friday morning.

In a statement, spokesperson for Ogun Command, SP Omolola Odutola said operatives from Owode Egba Police Division led by CSP Popoola Olasunkanmi swiftly responded to the distress call, leading to the arrest of Adewole Adekunle, who lives in Eleko in Aja area of Lagos State. However, other members of the gang fled into the bush, while they abandoned items of the ‘trade’ including one Volkswagen bus with registration number EKY 202 YG Lagos State along with its document.

Other items recovered abandoned by the gang include one Itel phone, one digger, one chisel, 11 big spanners, 25 small bolts, 11 big spanners, one big pincer, a polythene bag containing different clothes, and one big vandalized transformer and another vandalised tranformer that belongs to Showo community.

“Our men are currently expediting efforts to track down other members of the notorious vandals and arrest them for possible prosecution. Further information will be provided as the investigation continues,” the police added in the statement.

The Commissioner of Police CP Abiodun Alamutu, has ordered that the culprit be charged to Court as a show of deterrence to other intending vandals, he further warned scavengers to steer clear government properties otherwise face full wrath of the law.
