Atletico Madrid midfielder, Thomas Lemar, is set to undergo surgery due to a ruptured right Achilles tendon sustained during Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Valencia in LaLiga.
Lemar, a 27-year-old player who joined Atletico from AS Monaco in 2018, had to be stretchered off the pitch after the injury.
In a statement released on Sunday, Atletico confirmed the injury, saying, “Following tests carried out on the French player, the medical report from the club’s medical services indicates that he has a ruptured right Achilles tendon and will have to undergo surgery.”
The club also conveyed their well wishes to Lemar, stating, “All the best, Thom; we wish you a speedy recovery.”
Diego Simeone’s team, currently in seventh place in LaLiga with seven points from four matches, faces a challenging schedule with their Champions League opener against Lazio on Tuesday, followed by a league clash against Real Madrid on September 24.
