Gunmen have reportedly burnt eight soldiers, policemen and civil defence officers to death on Tuesday in broad daylight in Imo State.

Imo State is a haven of the deadly outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militant wing, Eastern Security Network (ESN) fighting to actualise Biafra republic.

The dastardly act occurred at Umualumaku community, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of the state around 11.30am.

Residents in the area have been thrown into confusion and panic when they saw the bodies of soldiers, policemen and civil defence burnt.

The security men were said to have been ambushed by the gunmen who attacked and killed them, then set their vehicles ablaze with them inside.

Video of the attack has gone viral. The vehicles were seen burning. Burnt bodies of security operatives were seen on the ground, as the attackers fled the scene.

A security operative who craved anonymity told the Punch that reinforcement teams had been sent to the scene of the crime with the intent to arrest the suspects and rescue the corpses of the slain security operative.

Henry Okoye, Imo State Police Command’s spokesman confirmed the tragedy, but said he does not have details yet.
