The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have agreed to embark on a nationwide strike on 3 October, 2023 over the removal of fuel subsidy.
President Bola Tinubu announced removal of fuel subsidy on 29 May, 2023 when he assumed office as the president of Nigeria.
The removal has led to massive increase in the prices of fuel, which has led to rising cost of goods and services nationwide.
NLC had embarked on two-day warning strike and protest to demand that the government alleviate the suffering of the masses.
Joe Ajaero, NLC’s President reportedly told a virtual National Executive Council meeting on Tuesday that a meeting was held with TUC to find the way forward.
He said the two unions had agreed to work together to put the government on their toes by embarking on indefinite strike.
The Punch quoted a source at the meeting as saying that initially some members did not want NLC to work with the TUC but that as of now, they had no choice.
The source said the Federal Government had not been proactive, adding that the strike is going to be a definite action this time around.
