One Sunday Onyisi Ufah a teacher at Alihami Secondary School, Agbor, Delta State, has allegedly been flogged to death by a father of a student who was angry that he disciplined his child for stealing palm wine from a farm near the school.
The shocking incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, 18th October, 2023.
Ufah had flogged some students for allegedly scaling the school fence to steal palm wine belonging to an old farmer.
However, the farmer reported the theft of the palm wine to the school authority.
The culprits were immediately identified and Ufah was asked to flog the students as part of a disciplinary measure of the school.
But as reported by an online Agbor-based tabloid, Ika Weekly, one of the affected students, ran home and informed his father.
The father, in turn, called the teacher on the phone threatening him for having the audacity to flog his son.
He was said to have threatened to “deal ruthlessly” with the teacher.
Not long after the threat on the phone, the angry father came to the School with a cane (believed to be charmed) and an altercation ensued between him and Ufah.
The parent subsequently flogged the teacher, who slumped and was immediately rushed to the Central Hospital, Agbor, where he was confirmed dead on arrival.
The suspect and his son were immediately arrested and detained at the Agbor Divisional Police Station as investigations in the case continue.
Meanwhile, the tragic incident has elicited widespread mourning among members of the family of the deceased and members of the Ika Grammar School Old Boys Association where the late Ufah is an active member.
In an online obituary announcement, members of Ika Grammar School Old Boys Association(the Principal of Alihami Secondary School is also a member of the 1982 set) called for a thorough investigation of the incident and justice for the family of the late teacher.
At the time of filing in this report, the Delta State Police Command has not reacted to the tragic incident.
