Gunshots at UNIBEN: 500-level student dead, many injured

A 500-level student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), was reportedly shot dead, while others were injured in a Shooting spree that rocked the institution in the evening of Friday, 27 October, 2023.

The identity of those involved in the shooting spree could not be ascertained as at the time of filing in this report.

But some sources claimed cult gangs were responsible.

According to eyewitness reports by X users, two other students were also shot and injured, with their condition currently unknown.

It was gathered that the clash began days ago at Ekiadolor, a satellite student community, before culminating in the shootings in UNIBEN.

A video shared online shows a red car riddled with bullet holes, from which the body of a man was removed and taken to the back of a pick-up van, as students gathered at the scene and stared in shock.

Also, bullet casings can be seen on the floor and also drops of blood. A man’s faze cap can also be seen abandoned on the floor at the scene.

Other students who were injured during the clash have taken to their X handles (formerly known as Twitter), to share photos of their injuries.

When contacted, Edo Police Command Spokesman, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, said he was yet to be informed of the incident.

“For now I am yet to be briefed of such incident. When I get the brief, I will be able to give proper information about that, but for now no information,” he said.
