A suspected scavenger was killed on Wednesday when a staircase collapsed on him at an abandoned one-storey building located at Elechi Street, Mile 3, Diobu, Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State.
Our correspondent who visited the scene reports that the building has been overtaken by weeds with the walls cracked all over.
In an interview with our reporter, Godstime Ihunwo, Chief Security Officer, CSO, of Nkpolu Oroworukwo, Mile 3 Diobu, Port Harcourt, said he received information at about 6:15 pm on Wednesday that some hoodlums went inside the abandoned building to smoke hard drugs.
Mr Ihunwo who is also a member of Diobu Vigilante Service disclosed that based on previous complaints from residents of the area about the use of the abandoned building as a smoking joint for hoodlums, he mobilized his men to the scene and on getting to the area, the hoodlums had fled.
The CSO of Nkpolu Oroworukwo stated that while searching for the hoodlums in the abandoned building, they saw the corpse of a male and on close examination, it was observed that the staircase of the storey building collapsed on the man whose identity is yet to be known.
Mr Ihunwo revealed that they raised an alarm that drew the attention of residents of the area who came to the scene and they informed the Nkpolu Divisional Police headquarters at Mile 3 Diobu.
As of the time of filing this report, the Police have visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment.
SP Grace Iringe Koko, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, of the Rivers State Command is yet to respond to the incident.
