As part of its bid to continue touching lives in society, the Rotary Club of Olumo Sunrise has donated free reading glasses to members of the Association of Professional Printers of Nigeria (ASSPON)
This gesture was in commemoration of the Adult Literacy programme, as part of the outlined activities of Rotary International.
President of the Club, Comrade (Rotn) Olamide Lawal who enlightened the artisans on the importance of eye Care, maintained that the eyes serve as the light to the whole body.
According to him, ” Medical and Health Care is one of the seven Areas of focus of Rotary, that’s why we are here to present reading glasses to you because we know how essential eyes are to your printing business and our existence as a whole,” Lawal said.
An Ophthalmologist, Dr Saliu, urged the beneficiaries to avoid excessive intake of salt, to avoid high blood pressure. He encouraged them to carry out eye check-ups in any registered hospital, at least once every year.
“It’s advisable to check the eyes, at least once in a year to know the condition of the eyes, because as one ages, the eyes tend to get older.” He explained
The doctor, who cited relevant examples of challenges associated with not checking up on the eyes, noted that proper care for the eyes is a very critical part of Healthcare.
“I remember consulting an optician, when I noticed eyes problem and he advised that I buy drugs and also purchased a recommended glasses. But due to the fact that I wasn’t a fan of eye glasses, I decided not to buy the glasses, so I opted for only drugs. And when the problem became incessant, I went back to the hospital, unfortunately the doctor said I must use the glasses.
However, if I had got the glasses the first time I visited the hospital, I would have used the glasses only for a maximum of a year, but as it was the second time he checked, he said he is not even sure that even if I use it for twenty years, that the eyes will come back to the way it used to be. So, at that time, I had no option, than to buy the glasses.”
About a hundred beneficiaries benefited from the seminar and donation of reading glasses.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Adenike Adegbite appreciated Rotary club calling for more of such features from well-meaning Clubs in the society
“I sincerely thank Rotary Club for this privilege and we will not forget their kind gesture,”.
Another beneficiary, Hassan Ojelade also encouraged the club, to keep up its good work.
According to ASSPON chairman , Abeokuta branch , Mr Olubode Makinde, “I want to appreciate all the members of Olumo Sunrise for the educative seminar and the reading glasses, given to our members, without collecting a dime from them”
