West African side Mali beat South Africa 2-0 on Tuesday in their Group D encounter at the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.
After a goalless first half, Mali took the lead in the 60th minute of the match. Hamari Traore has the simplest of tasks to roll the ball into an empty net from close range after a rebound left the keeper stranded.
Six minutes later, Mali doubled their lead. Lassine Sinayoko received a pass inside the box before slotting the ball past the goalkeeper.
Earlier in the first half, South Africa missed a penalty. Percy Tau missed the penalty after his poor effort went over the crossbar.
In the first half of added time, Lassine Sinayoko ran with the ball towards the keeper and pulled the trigger from close range, but Ronwen Williams anticipated his intention and made an amazing save to stop the shot going into the middle of the target.
As the match progressed, Sekou Koita took the set piece from outside the box. His shot headed towards the roof of the net, but Ronwen Williams dove and saved the effort, punching it onto the bar.
In added time, Djigui Diarra reacted well to deny a long-range free kick from Teboho Mokoena towards the bottom left corner.
