Former President, Muhammadu Buhari has said he expected whoever succeeded him to be fair to him because he has family and friends that will feel the impact of unfairness.

President Bola Tinubu succeeded Buhari on 29 May, 2023 as the 16th president of Nigeria.

Buhari disclosed this in a memoir titled: “Working with Buhari: Reflections of a Special Adviser, Media and Publicity (2015-2023),”  written by his former special adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina.

The former president was speaking on why he did not sack former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), when there was rumour of his plan to vie for the presidency.

Buhari said when Emefiele was linked with the campaign for the 2023 presidency, he did not ask him, because he told nobody he was getting involved.

The former president stated that if Emefiele had signified his intention to vie for the presidency, he would have removed him and told the nation why.

According to Buhari, unless there was firm evidence against him, it would be unfair and an act of injustice to remove him, acting on hearsay.

“If you punish a man unjustly, it could dog his footsteps throughout life, so if you would punish, you must have evidence and you should know that yourself wouldn’t be there forever. You would leave one day,” Buhari said.

He added that he was very conscious about the morale of people who served with him.

“I also expect whoever succeeds me (Tinubu) to be fair to me. I have family, friends, who will feel it. I’m very conscious of fairness,” Buhari said.
