Court remands 43-year-old businessman over alleged murder

A Makurdi Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday, ordered the remand of a 43-year-old businessman, Teryima Dooluum at the Nigeria Correctional Service Centre, Makurdi for allegedly killing Suega Iorshagher at a drinking joint.

Dooluum, who lives Behind RCM Primary School, Gajir, Tombu Village in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue, was charged with criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.

When the case was mentioned, the defendant did not take plea for want of jurisdiction on the part of the court.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Kelvin Mbanongun adjourned the matter until March 14 for further mention.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Godwin Ato told the court that the case was transferred from the Divisional Police Headquarters, Buruku to the State CID, Makurdi on Nov 20, 2023 via a letter dated same day.

Ato said the letter stated that the younger brother of the deceased, Ternenge Iorshagher had reported the matter at the police station on Nov 15, 2023.

The complainant said that on that same day, he was sitting at a drinking joint with the deceased who was his elder brother, at Ikyo Begha Settlement, Tombu Village in Buruku when eight persons led by Yandev Akaangee came and stabbed him with an axe.

He said the gang inflicted deep cuts on his brother’s neck and left hand with the axe and he bled to death as a result.

The Prosecutor said the gang leader, Akaangee was earlier arrested and arraigned at Chief Magistrates’ Court 1, and Dooluum who had been at large was just recently arrested during police further investigation while others are still at large.

Prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 97 and 222 of the penal code laws of Benue, 2004.
