Embarking on a remarkable journey from the vibrant landscapes of Nigeria to the scholarly halls of Texas State University, Professor Sheriff F. Folarin stands as an eminent figure in the realm of international relations. Born on August 15, 1973, in Kaduna City, Kaduna State, Northern Nigeria, he traces his roots to the Ilawo clan in Ogun State, exemplifying a legacy of princely distinction.

Professor Folarin’s educational odyssey began in Kaduna, weaving through various northern Nigerian cities. His formative years at Bosso Primary School and Oro Nursery and Primary School in Kwara State laid the foundation for academic excellence. With tenacity, he navigated through diverse secondary schools, culminating in his graduation from Abadina College, University of Ibadan, in 1989. His rich academic journey reflects a deep commitment to learning, solidified by outstanding achievements during his formative years.

Choosing history over law at the University of Ibadan, Professor Folarin’s academic brilliance shone through. An active participant in campus journalism, he ascended to leadership roles, leaving an indelible mark. In his first two years as a campus journalist, he emerged as the assistant general secretary and president of the Ibadan Union of Campus Journalists (UCJ), showcasing not only academic prowess but also leadership acumen.

His tenure as UCJ President propelled him into the Student Union Government, where he assumed the position of a representative council member, representing the Independence Hall constituency. During a major interregnum in the Student Union, Professor Folarin was called upon to mount the speakership position temporarily, demonstrating his capacity to restore order and stability.

With over two decades in academia, Professor Folarin made history as the first professor of international relations at Covenant University, where he dedicated nearly 19 years. His impactful career expanded across renowned institutions globally, including the University of South Carolina, Ithaca College, and Texas State University in the United States. His global exposure, serving as a visiting professor at the University of Rwanda, Rwandan Defense Force Command and Staff College, and Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Nigeria, reflects his commitment to internationalizing education.

A recipient of prestigious awards, including the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program in 2015, Professor Folarin’s scholarly contributions are both vast and impactful. With around 100 publications, including books like “Declining Hegemonical Foreign Policies of Nigeria” and “Rwanda’s Radical Transformation,” he has significantly shaped the discourse on international relations. His editorial roles, such as being the editor-in-chief of the Africa Symposia Issue of the Good Governance Worldwide, underscore his influence in academic publishing.

Professor Folarin’s leadership extends beyond academia. Elected as the President of the All-Nigeria Universities Debating Council in 2019, he demonstrated his commitment to fostering intellectual discourse. His advocacy for unity and transcending tribalism echoes in his public engagements, urging Nigerians to prioritize national unity. His extensive involvement in national assignments, including membership in National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation panels, showcases his dedication to enhancing the quality of higher education in Nigeria.

Professor Folarin’s exceptional contributions have earned him numerous accolades, such as the Outstanding Role Model Award in 2021 and the Science Communication Award in 2020.
