The Federal Government on Saturday rubbished reports that it planned to convert foreign exchange in domiciliary accounts of individuals to naira.

Wale Edun, Coordinating Minister of Economy, in a statement on Saturday, said there is no iota of truth in the report by The Punch.

“There is no iota of truth in the claims of Punch Newspaper that the Federal Government plans to convert foreign exchange in depositors’ domiciliary accounts to naira,” Edun said.

According to the minister, the publication of such falsehood at a time when the government is working to restore economic stability and confidence in the national currency is tantamount to economic sabotage.

Edun added that the report in the Punch Newspaper violated the standards of responsible journalism.

He said for the avoidance of doubt, depositors’ foreign currency in their domiciliary accounts would not be converted to naira.
