Luca Modric’s stunning strike gives Real Madrid a lone goal victory against Sevilla at the Bernabeu on Sunday to extend their lead by eight points.
Modric, who came in as a 75th minute substitute scored six minutes later to give Madrid the victory.
Modric made himself some space on the edge of the penalty area and pulled the trigger. His accurate effort went in off the post and the score changed to 1-0.
Madrid had opened the scoring 10 minutes into the game, but the goal was disallowed for a foul in the build-up.
Vinicius Junior passed the ball into the penalty area. Lucas Vazquez collected it and quickly sent it into the bottom left corner via the post, but it did not stand after VAR check.
In the 39th minute, a pass landed at the feet of Aurelien Tchouameni in the middle of the box, he looked up and shot but the effort was superbly blocked by a defender.
Two minutes into first half added time, Federico Valverde wasted an opportunity after finding himself in acres of space and fired in a terrific shot from long range straight towards the roof of the net, but the goalkeeper made a brilliant save.
Shortly after the restart, a great pass put Valverde clear inside the box, he sidestepped the keeper but inexplicably hit his shot against the right post.
In the 52nd minute, Isaac Romero anticipated the lofted pass and raced into the box with just the keeper to beat. He shot early towards the left side of the goal, but Andriy Lunin pulled off a great save to deny him.
Four minutes later, Vinicius Junior had time and space inside the box after picking up a neat pass, but his shot towards the left side of the goal was brilliantly saved by Orjan Nyland.
Midway into the second half, Rodrygo zig-zagged his way into the box and failed to direct a shot inside the left post as the goalkeeper pulled off a miraculous stop.
