He said: “As the fourth estate of the realm, journalists should carry out their duties as watchdogs of the society and ensure the objectivity in their reports. I call for the introduction of censorship on social media contents to checkmate the spread of fake news and hate speeches”. 

The Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, says the Federal Government ought to ensure a stricter control of the social media by censoring the contents  shared on its platforms by Nigerians.

Bago who was speaking on Thursday during his decoration as the Grand Patron of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Niger State Council, said the censoring of social media contents by the FG would help to combat the the spread of fake news.

He said it would also help to  promote objective reportage by practitioners of conventional journalism.

He said: “As the fourth estate of the realm, journalists should carry out their duties as watchdogs of the society and ensure the objectivity in their reports. I call for the introduction of censorship on social media contents to checkmate the spread of fake news and hate speeches”.
