The Lagos State Government has announced the closure of part of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway for two days over the damaged Alapere Bridge in Ketu.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, in a statement on Friday, said only the Alapere to Lagos Island section would be affected.

He said the closure of the part of the road would be on Saturday and Sunday.

“Following the damage of the pedestrian bridge at Estate Gate, Ketu Alapere on Lagos -Ibadan Expressway by a heavy duty truck, the Lagos State Government has announced traffic diversion along the route to enable the reconstruction of the bridge.

“The reconstruction work will commence with a 2- day dismantling and evacuation of the damaged pedestrian bridge from 2pm tomorrow Saturday 9th March to Sunday 10th March, 2024,” Osiyemi said.

The commissioner said alternative routes for motorists apart from the layby at Estate Gate, had been provided.

He said traffic to Anthony/Oshodi from Motorway/7up axis would be diverted to Ojota/Odo-Alaro down to Anthony/Oshodi to connect other areas.

“Traffic inward Iyana Oworo/Charlie boy/Oshodi/Lagos Island from Motorway/7up axis will be diverted to Samson Ayorinde Street to connect Ogudu road and link Adebare Street to access other desired destinations.

“Traffic to Iyana-Oworo/Charlie-boy/Oshodi/Lagos-Island from Motorway/7up axis will go through the lay-by at Alapere to connect Lagos Ibadan Expressway,” Osiyemi added.

The commissioner stated that motorists heading to 7up/Motorway/Ojodu Berger from 3rd Mainland Bridge would use the main carriageway but would experience a little bottleneck before the bridge as the three lanes would be narrowed to two lanes on Saturday to allow dismantling and evacuation of the bridge stairs.

He added that motorists heading to Ketu/Ikorodu-Lagos Road from the 3rd Mainland Bridge would utilise the slip road at Estate Gate Alapere to connect Ajiboye Street inwards Demurin Street down to Ketu to connect Ikorodu-Lagos Road.

“Only Alapere to Lagos Island section will be affected. Motorists are implored to be patient as the Bridge dismantling and evacuation is in preparation to reconstruct a new pedestrian bridge,” he said.
